Week 4 - Lighting

This was taken at dusk, and I really like the soft lighting with more cool tones rather than the sunny warmer tones in the other two shots. I also like this composition as well and the contrast between the white pink on the left and the darker on the right is pleasing to the eye. I have learned through classes and my own experience that first thing in the morning and sunset is the best time to take photos because the light is perfect. That being said I found that my photos from night and morning are the ones that are my strongest I think. This was a great assignment!
This was taken mid-day outside ( in the shade ). I like this image because it is very abstracted, but in a elegant way. I like the lighting also but not as much as the other two.
I decided to use my favorite flower again but I tried to abstract it more and make more of an interesting composition. This was taken in the morning, inside. I really like the lighting of this one because it is so soft and I think the translucent petals allow just the right amount of light to seep through. I think that this is my favorite shot of the week!

  1. Rachel, I really like the use of your color in here. One thing that I think is really unique is the ability that the lighting shows is that the flower is all the same color and yet it's different colors becausee of the lighting.

  2. Oh wow! What a good example of the assignment! There is a definite lighting difference in each photo, and surprisingly, I really like the second one! It's very soft and gentle and the petals are almost translucent. The first one is my other favorite, but I tend to be much more drawn to cool tones than warm ones. Good job on taking a warm-toned subject and making it look entirely different, though!

The examples your presented for the assignment different time slots in the day are
quite revealing. They exemplify the different
tonal value within the petals. The evening light is a good example. The evening light depicts the cool colors a more bluish cast. The morning light indicates a more yellowish light.
    Angela Very lovely!

  5. @Angela, great observation about the hue cast from each of the different times of day.

As I had written in another post, of all the tools at your disposal, light is by far your most important. The way the sun is effected by clouds and other atmospheric phenomenon is of utmost importance to understand. After you begin to get a grasp on that, then there are all of the variations on artificial light, like the TV, a flash, fluorescent light, incandescent light and so on, to learn about.
